The 30-second answer

Use Naver Map as your main map app in Korea: Google Maps often cannot give walking directions here. NAVER officially supports an English interface in current Naver Map versions and provides place, transit, route, navigation, subway-map, and train-search functions. Install it before travel, switch it to English (Android: MY/profile → Settings → Language; iPhone: phone Settings → NAVER Map → Preferred Language), and test a real route near your accommodation. Keep the destination's Korean name and address as the fallback.

Two habits make Naver Map work smoothly in English: search for place names rather than street addresses, and when a search comes up empty, paste the Korean name of the place (copy it from the venue’s Instagram or your booking confirmation).

Set it up before you fly

  1. Install "NAVER Map, Navigation" from the App Store or Google Play.
  2. On Android, use MY/profile → Settings → Language → English. On iOS, the same menu can send you to device Settings → NAVER Map → Preferred Language. NAVER notes that the route differs by app and OS version.
  3. Allow location access "while using the app" — everything meaningful (blue dot, nearby search, re-routing) depends on it.
  4. Sign-in is optional. Saving favorites requires a Naver account, which foreigners can create with an email address; skip it if you only need directions.
  5. Test at home: search "Gyeongbokgung Palace" and request walking directions from your hotel. If that works, you are ready.

Searching so results actually appear

  1. Try the English place name first: "Gwangjang Market", "Seoul Station", hotel names as written on your booking.
  2. No result? Paste the Korean name. Small cafes, barbecue joints, and boutiques are often indexed only in Korean. Copy 을지로 골뱅이 골목 from wherever you found it and paste it in.
  3. Chain-store trick: search the chain name plus the neighborhood ("Olive Young Myeongdong") to pick the right branch.
  4. Address entry works too, but Korean addresses confuse newcomers (district → street → number). Place-name search avoids the whole problem.
  5. Tap a result to see hours, phone number, photos, and reviews — check the hours here before crossing the city; Korean small businesses take irregular days off.

Getting directions: the three modes that matter

  1. Walking: tap the directions arrow, choose the walking icon. Watch the map's blue heading cone rather than street names — Seoul's alley networks make "turn left at the third alley" meaningless.
  2. Transit: the default and best mode. It shows exact subway exits ("Exit 4"), which bus stop and route number, and live arrival countdowns. Subway exit numbers are gold — arriving at a meeting point via the wrong exit of a 14-exit station can cost you ten confused minutes underground.
  3. Driving/taxi estimate: use it only as a planning estimate. Pickup delay, traffic, road restrictions, and the taxi's actual route can change the result.

When things go wrong

  • A place search returns nothing in English: find the venue's Korean name (its Instagram bio, the booking confirmation, a review site) and paste it. This solves the majority of "Naver can't find it" complaints.
  • GPS is jumping around downtown: stop in a safe place, compare the app with a station exit or street sign, check location permission and precise-location settings, and avoid crossing a road while staring at the map.
  • Route directions are showing Korean text: re-check Settings → Language → English; some guidance strings and reviews remain Korean-only — screenshot them into Papago for an instant translation.
  • You are underground with no usable data: use a saved screenshot and station signs, move to a staffed area, or ask station staff. Don’t count on finding free public Wi-Fi underground.
  • Naver simply fails you: fall back to Kakao Map for a second opinion, or show a taxi driver the destination in Korean — see the phrases below.

Korean phrases to show

Korean Romanization When to show it
여기로 가려면 어떻게 가요? Yeogiro garyeomyeon eotteoke gayo? Showing your phone: how do I get here?
이 가게 이름을 한국어로 써 주시겠어요? I gage ireumeul hangugeoro sseo jusigesseoyo? Ask staff to write a shop's Korean name for searching
몇 번 출구로 나가야 해요? Myeot beon chulguro nagaya haeyo? Which exit number should I take?
여기가 어디예요? Yeogiga eodiyeyo? Where is "here"? (showing the map)
걸어갈 수 있어요? Georeogal su isseoyo? Can I walk there?

When the English switch or the route screen doesn’t behave

Most “Naver Map won’t go English” problems come down to the app version or an iOS setting that moved. NAVER’s own help page spells out the path, so here it is next to the fix for each snag.

What you see What to do
Android: no idea where the language option lives Tap the MY (profile) icon to the right of the search bar, then the gear icon at the top right, then Language. The choices are Korean, English, Simplified Chinese and Japanese.
iOS: tapping Language throws you out to the phone’s Settings That’s expected. On iPhone the in-app Language item hands off to Settings > NAVER Map > Preferred Language, and you pick English there.
iOS: there is no Preferred Language row under NAVER Map at all Go to Settings > General > Language & Region and add English as a preferred language. NAVER notes this applies from iOS app version 5.31.0.
No Language item anywhere in the app The setting exists from app version 5.1.3. Version 5.0 and above installs only on Android 8.0 or iOS 16.0 and later, so a very old phone may be stuck on a build without it.
The blue dot is off by a block inside a mall or station NAVER says the location comes straight from the phone’s GPS, mobile data and Wi-Fi, and is more likely to be wrong indoors or next to large buildings. Step outside or match the dot to an exit number before walking.

Subway-only planning without the full map

If you just need train times, open the subway map directly: MY > Subway map, or the Transit tab and the subway-map bubble under the search box. It covers every region with a subway, not only Seoul; switch cities with the region selector at the top right. Pick two stations and the result can be sorted by fastest, fewest transfers or lowest fare. Set a departure time if you’re planning tomorrow’s trip tonight, and the Timetable/Real-time button on the route detail shows the station’s schedule and where the trains are right now.

A quick Korean-name fallback drill

  1. Search the English name once. If the top hit is in the wrong district, don’t tap it.
  2. Copy the Korean name from the place’s booking confirmation or social profile, for example 광장시장 for Gwangjang Market.
  3. Paste it, then compare the district shown under the result (종로구, 중구 and so on) with the address on your booking before you hit Directions.

Step 3 is the one people skip, and it’s where wrong-branch trips come from.

FAQ

Why doesn't Google Maps work properly in Korea?

Korean law restricts exporting high-precision map data to servers outside the country, and Google has not deployed the domestic infrastructure that full navigation would require. The result: reliable lookups, unreliable directions. This has been true for years and is not about your phone.

Naver Map or Kakao Map — which should I install?

Test Naver Map first because its English interface is officially documented. A second map can be useful, but verify its current language, account, route, and payment features on your own device before relying on it.

Does Naver Map work offline?

Do not assume every route feature works offline. Before losing data, save screenshots of the route, exits, transfer points, and the destination's Korean name and address. Follow live station and safety signage over an old screenshot.

Can it estimate taxi fares?

The driving mode shows a route and toll estimate and, depending on version, an approximate taxi fare. Treat it as a sanity-check figure, not a quote; the meter is the actual price.

How do I share my location with a friend?

Use the share button on a place or a dropped pin to send a link through KakaoTalk or any messenger — the recipient sees it in their map app in their own language.
