Option 1: AREX train — the default
AREX runs two different services on the same line, and mixing them up is the most common mistake:
- Express Train: non-stop between the airport (Terminal 1 and Terminal 2) and Seoul Station, with reserved seats and a separate ticket. Terminal 2 is the far end of the line, so the ride from T2 is several minutes longer than from T1.
- All Stop Train: a normal commuter train that stops at intermediate stations including Gimpo Airport and Hongik University (Hongdae). It accepts T-money like any subway line and needs no reservation.
- After exiting arrivals, follow the signs reading "Airport Railroad" or "AREX" down to basement level 1.
- Decide: Express (reserved seat, non-stop, Seoul Station only) or All Stop (cheaper, more stops, T-money).
- For the Express, buy a ticket at the AREX ticket office or machine (English available) and go to the dedicated Express platform.
- If your hotel is in Hongdae, take the All Stop train and get off at Hongik University Station — do not ride the Express past it to Seoul Station and backtrack.
If your hotel is not near Seoul Station or the AREX line, you will transfer to the subway. With two large suitcases during rush hour, this is genuinely unpleasant; consider the bus instead.
Option 2: Airport limousine bus — best with heavy luggage
Airport buses leave from the curb right outside the arrivals halls of both terminals. Staff load your suitcases into the luggage hold, every passenger gets a seat, and routes fan out to neighborhoods all over Seoul and satellite cities.
- Before leaving the arrivals hall, look up which bus route serves your hotel — the official Incheon Airport transportation page lists routes by destination, and hotel front desks answer this by email before you fly.
- Find your bus stand number on the signage (T1 and T2 have different stand layouts).
- Buy a ticket at the ticket booth or machine near the stands, or tap T-money / pay the driver where the route allows it.
- Tell the driver or attendant your stop if asked, load your luggage, and keep the small luggage tag they hand you.
- Watch the on-board display — announcements cycle through Korean and English.
The trade-off: buses sit in the same traffic as everyone else. A weekday 6 p.m. arrival into Gangnam can take well over an hour longer than the timetable suggests.
Option 3: Taxi — for groups and late arrivals
Follow the "Taxi" signs from arrivals to the official taxi stands. Regular (orange/silver/white), premium "deluxe" (black), and larger van taxis line up separately; deluxe and van taxis cost noticeably more.
- Use the official taxi stand only. Ignore anyone inside the terminal offering you a ride — touting is a known airport scam pattern.
- Show the driver your destination written in Korean (see phrases below).
- Confirm the meter is running. All legitimate Seoul-bound taxis use a meter plus expressway tolls, which are added to the fare and are normally paid by the passenger.
- – The airport’s official taxi guide lists taxi types, stands, flat fares and night surcharges, but says nothing about which cards drivers accept. Carry enough Korean won in cash for the whole fare and ask the driver before you set off whether your card will work.
- Late at night a surcharge applies: 20–40% on standard taxis depending on the hour (see the fare table below).
For a group of four with luggage, a van taxi's total cost divided four ways can approach the bus fare per person — do that arithmetic before dismissing it.

Taxi night surcharges on the airport page: a standard Seoul taxi adds 20% from 22:00 to 23:00, 40% from 23:00 to 02:00 and 20% from 02:00 to 04:00. Deluxe and jumbo taxis add 20% from 22:00 to 04:00. The foreigner-only International Taxi and Smart Taxi charge a flat fare within Seoul and board at T1 4C or T2 3C.

A worked example with those fares (hypothetical group): four adults from T1 to Myeongdong pay 4 × 17,000 = KRW 68,000 on bus 6015, or 4 × 4,750 = KRW 19,000 on the All Stop train to Seoul Station plus a subway leg. A taxi only makes sense on price if its metered fare plus tolls comes in near that KRW 68,000 bus total, so compare the driver’s estimate against it rather than against a single ticket.
Late-night arrivals: after the last train and bus
Late flights, immigration, baggage, terminal transfers, and walking time can erase a tight connection. Never plan from scheduled landing time alone.
Work out your real timeline before you fly:
- Take your scheduled landing time and add a realistic buffer for immigration, baggage claim, and customs. Late-evening banks of arrivals queue.
- Compare that time against the last departure for your chosen option, from your terminal (T1 and T2 have different last departures).
- Build a conservative buffer and save a fallback before flying. The required margin depends on the terminal, flight, baggage, mobility, and actual route to the platform or stop.

Rules that keep a late arrival boring:
- Have your accommodation address saved in Korean on your phone, screenshotted so it works without data.
- Confirm your hotel's front desk hours before you fly. Small guesthouses may have no one on duty after midnight, and arriving at 2 a.m. to a locked door is worse than the transport problem.
- Sort connectivity before you leave the airport. Pickup counters have closing times; an eSIM installed before departure removes this failure mode entirely.
- Get cash or confirm your card works before you leave the terminal, in case a driver's card reader fails.
Seoul late-night buses from Incheon: routes, fares, departures

Read the timetable for the gap, not just the first bus. From T1 no Seoul late-night bus leaves between 02:10 and 03:40, and on any single route the overnight gap runs from about an hour and a half to well over two hours. If you clear customs at 02:30, the next bus is a 70-minute wait at best, and the taxi’s 20% surcharge band (02:00–04:00) is the price to set against it. When things go wrong
- You landed near midnight and the last train left: check the late-night airport bus routes on the official airport page (they run limited hours on a few corridors), or take a taxi from the official stand. Do not accept unlicensed rides.
- You missed the last late-night bus too: use the official taxi stand, ask the airport information desk for the current safe option, or wait only in an area the airport permits until morning transport. Compare a verified hotel total with the displayed taxi estimate; neither is automatically cheaper.
- You took the Express but your hotel is in Hongdae: get off at Seoul Station and ride the All Stop line or subway Line 2 back; it costs you 20–30 minutes, not a disaster.
- The bus ticket machine rejects your foreign card: pay cash at the staffed booth, or top up T-money with cash and tap on.
- You fell asleep and missed your bus stop: get off at the next stop and show a taxi driver your hotel address; intra-Seoul rides are short.

Which is fastest?
To Seoul Station, the Express train is the most predictable: 43 minutes from T1 and 51 from T2, with no road traffic. Road traffic can delay buses and taxis, while platform access, waiting, and the final transfer affect train time. For other neighborhoods, the bus or taxi can win if it stops closer to your hotel.
Can I use T-money straight from the airport?
The AREX All Stop service accepts a regular transportation card. Bus and taxi acceptance must be confirmed for the specific operator or vehicle. Keep another payment method and follow the current ticket-machine, counter, stop, or vehicle instructions.
Is the Express train worth it over the All Stop train?
If you value a guaranteed seat and are going to Seoul Station anyway, yes. If your destination is Hongdae or along the line, the All Stop train is both cheaper and more direct.
Do airport buses run all night?

Is it safe to wait at Incheon until morning?
If you wait overnight, remain only in public areas permitted by airport staff, keep bags under your control, and monitor terminal and transport notices. Open shops, seating, charging points, and access can change. If sleep or accessibility is important, reserve suitable accommodation instead of assuming space will be available.
How do I get to the airport from Seoul at the end of my trip?
Reverse the same choice. Leave extra margin: check-in counters and departure security at Incheon can be slow at peak times, and T2 airlines (including Korean Air) require the longer train/bus leg.
My flight arrives at Terminal 2 — does anything change?
The same train and bus options exist at T2; it is simply farther from Seoul, so trains and buses take a few minutes longer and taxi fares are somewhat higher.
