The 30-second answer
Map coverage and route features differ by app, device, language, and date in Korea, so do not arrive depending on an app you have not tested. NAVER officially supports an English interface in current Naver Map versions and provides place, transit, route, navigation, subway-map, and train-search functions. Install it before travel, switch the interface to English, and test a real route near your accommodation. Keep the destination's Korean name and address as the fallback.
Two habits make Naver Map work smoothly in English: search for place names rather than street addresses, and when a search comes up empty, paste the Korean name of the place (copy it from the venue's Instagram, a booking site, or our guides).

Set it up before you fly
- Install "NAVER Map, Navigation" from the App Store or Google Play.
- On Android, use MY/profile → Settings → Language → English. On iOS, the same menu can send you to device Settings → NAVER Map → Preferred Language. NAVER notes that the route differs by app and OS version.
- Allow location access "while using the app" — everything meaningful (blue dot, nearby search, re-routing) depends on it.
- Sign-in is optional. Saving favorites requires a Naver account, which foreigners can create with an email address; skip it if you only need directions.
- Test at home: search "Gyeongbokgung Palace" and request walking directions from your hotel. If that works, you are ready.
Searching so results actually appear
- Try the English place name first: "Gwangjang Market", "Seoul Station", hotel names as written on your booking.
- No result? Paste the Korean name. Small cafes, barbecue joints, and boutiques are often indexed only in Korean. Copy 을지로 골뱅이 골목 from wherever you found it and paste it in.
- Chain-store trick: search the chain name plus the neighborhood ("Olive Young Myeongdong") to pick the right branch.
- Address entry works too, but Korean addresses confuse newcomers (district → street → number). Place-name search avoids the whole problem.
- Tap a result to see hours, phone number, photos, and reviews — check the hours here before crossing the city; Korean small businesses take irregular days off.
Getting directions: the three modes that matter
- Walking: tap the directions arrow, choose the walking icon. Watch the map's blue heading cone rather than street names — Seoul's alley networks make "turn left at the third alley" meaningless.
- Transit: the default and best mode. It shows exact subway exits ("Exit 4"), which bus stop and route number, live arrival countdowns, and total fare estimates. Subway exit numbers are gold — arriving at a meeting point via the wrong exit of a 14-exit station can cost you ten confused minutes underground.
- Driving/taxi estimate: use it only as a planning estimate. Pickup delay, traffic, road restrictions, and the taxi's actual route can change the result.
When things go wrong
- A place search returns nothing in English: find the venue's Korean name (its Instagram bio, the booking confirmation, a review site) and paste it. This solves the majority of "Naver can't find it" complaints.
- GPS is jumping around downtown: stop in a safe place, compare the app with a station exit or street sign, check location permission and precise-location settings, and avoid crossing a road while staring at the map.
- Route directions are showing Korean text: re-check Settings → Language → English; some guidance strings and reviews remain Korean-only — screenshot them into Papago for an instant translation.
- You are underground with no usable data: use a saved screenshot and station signs, move to a staffed area, or ask station staff. Public Wi-Fi presence and login requirements vary, so it is not an emergency fallback to assume.
- Naver simply fails you: fall back to Kakao Map for a second opinion, or show a taxi driver the destination in Korean — see the phrases below.

FAQ
Why doesn't Google Maps work properly in Korea?
Korean law restricts exporting high-precision map data to servers outside the country, and Google has not deployed the domestic infrastructure that full navigation would require. The result: reliable lookups, unreliable directions. This has been true for years and is not about your phone.
Naver Map or Kakao Map — which should I install?
Test Naver Map first because its English interface is officially documented. A second map can be useful, but verify its current language, account, route, and payment features on your own device before relying on it.
Do I need a Naver account?

Does Naver Map work offline?

Use the share button on a place or a dropped pin to send a link through KakaoTalk or any messenger — the recipient sees it in their map app in their own language.
